Birthday with Purpose – Turning Awareness into Action
Next Friday, 6 March, I’ll be marking my birthday a little differently. Instead of gifts and cards, I’m asking for donations that deliver real social value.
To take this commitment to the next level, I’ll be swapping my warm, safe bed for a cardboard box and sleeping overnight in the Community Orchard to raise awareness of rough sleeping in our area. This forms part of the YMCA Sleep Easy initiative, with all funds raised going directly to the Nomad Centre.
I won’t be doing this alone. Several volunteers will be joining me, including the exceptionally talented Nicky Haxby, who will be playing and singing as we set up our cardboard boxes and create a shared focal point for the evening.
In a great example of community collaboration, one of our local residents—who already dedicates time to distributing hot meals to people experiencing homelessness—has kindly offered to cook a hot meal for everyone taking part.
A few people have asked whether the event will go ahead if it’s raining. The answer is simple: yes. If you’re homeless, the weather doesn’t give you options—so neither will we.
If you’d like to get involved:
• We still have cardboard boxes available if you want to sleep out with us
• Or come along, sit around the campfire, and listen to Nicky’s live music
• If anyone in the village would like to help by providing breakfast the next morning—bacon butties or anything warm would be fantastic—please get in touch
To support the cause, please make a donation using the QR code below. Every contribution helps convert awareness into tangible impact.
Together, let’s turn one night of discomfort into meaningful outcomes for those who face this reality every night.
